Welcome

Welcome by RSAI President

Representing our community, the Regional Science Association International (RSAI), I would like to invite you all to attend the 9th World Congress in Timisoara, Romania next May.

As you know, RSAI has three super-regions, the European Regional Science Association (ERSA), Pacific Regional Science Conference Organization (PRSCO), and RSAmericas (North American Regional Science Council and Latin American Sections). Each region had different backgrounds at the time of founding, have encouraged mutual exchange under the umbrella of RSAI, and have evolved in different manners through the annual international meetings of RSAI for more than a half century. On the other hand, the World Congress, initiated in 1980, is truly an RSAI international meeting in the sense that it has traditionally fulfilled multilateral functions of the RSAI community as a whole. RSAI still needs to be developed in countries where official RSAI Sections are not yet established. This is also one of the major reasons the RSAI Council Board is mainly composed of delegates from the three super-regions. The RSAI Council discusses various matters from not only local/domestic/superregional views but also international and global views of our community.

Since 2008, our friends lead by Prof. Daniela Constantine, President of the Romanian Regional Science Association, which is an active section of ERSA and RSAI building bridges to Eastern and Middle Europe, have unselfishly prepared for successful organization of the Congress. Our Romanian friends are very enthusiastic to welcome all of you and your families to Timisoara. Timisoara is a most beautiful city in any sense and people living there have progressive and enterprising spirits. You may enjoy not only academic activities scheduled for the Meeting but also historical and cultural exchange with friends from all over the world.

The next world Congress is a good opportunity for us to understand and realize that we are all part of RSAI in every sense. I cordially request your active participation in the Congress.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon in Timisoara.

Yoshiro Higano, President of RSAI

Dear reader,

Let me welcome to the website of the 9th RSAI World conference, to be held in Timisoara in May 2012. As has been the case for the previous eight world conferences, also this time the RSAI conference is expected to be a great event. The effort of the scientific committee to organize the programme together with the rigorous and admirable work of the local organizing committee are a guarantee of success. The event will gather more than 200 leading scholars in the field of regional science, dealing with current challenges – like climate change, economic crisis, demographic trends – that put under severe stress the future of our territory. The debate will take place in the stimulating and fascinating urban environment of Timisoara, a city where recent important historical events have taken place and where the new forms of globalization show their effects on the economic development of the area. For all these reasons, I encourage you to participate and I look forward to welcoming you in Timisoara.

Roberta Capello
Immediate past-president of RSAI

The 9th RSAI World Conference that will take place from the 9th till the 12th May, 2012, is requested event for the world community, the needed review for regional science and the essential network stimulus for regional science associations around the world. The world community requests improved scientific reasoning on global issues. Regional Science tools need to be assessed, used and diffused. And our members and associations need to establish the essencial connection between the solutions of local problems and the ideas developed globally.

Timisoara is the potential node connecting various Easts and many Wests; it is the possible link between diverse Norths and dissimilar Souths; and, hopefully, it is the desired connection between noisy data and meaningful signals. Spring is a good season for hope and creativity, and a relatively remote place enlarges the dimension of time to think and to talk.

The RSAI Council gathered in June in Seoul and in August in Barcelona already agreed to invest on RSAI World Conferences and Timisoara is a crucial step on this development paths.

Tomaz Ponce Dentinho
Executive Director of RSAI

Dear colleagues and friends,

The Romanian Regional Science Association warmly invites you all to participate in the 2012 World Congress of the RSAI, generously hosted by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, West University of Timisoara. We are proud and happy to be entrusted with the organisation of this great event in 2012, when the Romanian RSA celebrates 10 years since its admission as the Romanian section of the RSAI and a national section of the ERSA.

My colleagues and I assure you that you will find the traditional Romanian hospitality all around and, besides the invaluable scientific gains, the spirit of networking and friendship will be the hallmark of the congress.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Timisoara in May 2012!

Daniela L. Constantin
President of the Romanian RSA

Dear participants,

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, part of the West University of Timisoara, is particularly honoured to be host of the 9th - World Congress of the prestigious International Association of Regional Science - Regional Science Association International (RSAI). This event could not have taken place if our faculty did not enjoy the continuous confidence and support from the R.S.A.I. association board, ever since 2009, represented by Professor Roberta Capello, the present executive board of RSAI, chaired by the Honourable Professor Yoshiro Higano, and the executive board of the Romanian Regional Science Association (R.R.S.A.), represented by Professor Daniela Constantin.

The World Congress to be held in May 2012 in Timisoara will be the main event, as we consider it, a major issue in regional development and at the same time, unique to South-Eastern Europe, taking into consideration that this Congress took place in other countries such as Japan, Switzerland, South Africa, Brazil.

With the support of R.S.A.I., R.R.S.A., Government contribution, Local and National Authorities, Regional Development Agencies, academics of the W.U.T., researchers and representatives from the business environment, we expect this World Congress to be a real bridge of high-level confrontation on the sustainable regional development between participants.

Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration,
West University of Timisoara
